REPORT DEAD LINKS --- we can't keep this site up-to-date without your help
HOW THE WEBSITE WAS (and is being) PUT TOGETHER
PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING (A) to (N). It tells how we set-up the website.
(A) Most of the pages on the website are in (1) plain text -- without "tables" and other complicated
formats which complicate printing, or (2) a .pdf format. This means, that in either case (1) or (2), the
printed page and the website page will look almost alike.
(B) The booklets are also in pretty good condition and can be easily navigated. They each mostly
have a good Table of Contents, some Indexes and appropriate Glossaries
(C) We originally were going to use a lot more .pdf files -- essentially converting all the .html pages
to .pdf -- but we had a lot of trouble not being able to link to the .pdf files consistently. Often, the
links would not "take".
(D) Our original keyboarding is is done in Adobe's "InDesign" which we use as a word-processor.
(E) The material from "InDesign" is copied and pasted into "Dreamweaver" and the uploaded to the
site where it appears as .html
(F) Although we think the website is in pretty good shape and can be navigated completely if you
start with the links on the first page, we think there is room for major improvement whereby the various
links are put together into coherent groups of 2 to 10 related articles.
(G) If you have suggestions for easier navigation and/or a better indexing system -- let me know /
Marty Carbone / martycarbone@yahoo.com
(H) We are trying to make it as easy as possible for readers to read everything online -- or print out
the material and
(1) efficiently staple it at home with heavy-duty hand staplers (readily available at any large office-supply store
such as staples or Office Depot
(2) make it into sturdy comb-bound booklets using inexpensive binding machines and .010" thick
Mylar covers. These inexpensive tools are available at most office-supply stores.
(I) Please let us know what you think of the Linked (A-Z) Alphabetical Site Index (LASI) which will be on
our Index Page. The LASI is under construction
(J) We think this tried and true, age-old (A-Z) system is superior to fill-in-the-window-box search systems
wherein the computer may miss links which sometimes are hidden or bypassed by the format and the peculiarities
of the English language. Theoretically, if the LASI is done perfectly and correctly it should cover every URL on
the site. Our LASI is not perfect -- that is why we will have the 5- to 12-links below the LASI on our Index Page.
(K By the way -- Because most (all) websites use the word "INDEX" for the first page of the website, I believe
the original Internet designers designed those pages to be used as an "index" to the site. Indexes can either be
strictly Alphabetical or based on a "Category Tree" that fan out to a large number of sub-categories.
(L) We believe sensible category trees are very difficult to design to be absolutely coherent and are almost
guaranteed to hide or miss certain URL's on the site, while Alphabetical Indexes can be perfect if the designer
stays awake.
(M) We know our LASI is not perfect -- because we started by using a "category tree" and did not start the
LASI until we had worked on the site for years. Sorry about that. We plan to go back and switch to a complete
LASI in the future as soon as we (A) have the time and (B) figure out the best way to switch easily.
(N) Perhaps both a COMBINED LASI and Category Tree would be the best system? What do you think?
